The Upcycling Movement

Why Pallet Furniture?

Reclaimed pallet wood is not just eco-friendly. It is a design material with inherent character that mass-produced furniture simply cannot replicate.

One-of-a-Kind

No two pallets are alike. Natural variations in grain, color, and wear marks make every piece of furniture genuinely unique.

Sustainably Made

Every piece diverts wood from landfills and requires zero virgin lumber. Choosing reclaimed means choosing the planet.

Built to Last

Pallet wood is selected for strength. The same lumber that carries 2,000-pound loads makes incredibly durable furniture.

Locally Crafted

Every piece is designed and built right here in Albuquerque, supporting local craftsmanship and reducing transportation footprint.

Wood Treatment & Finishing Options

The finish makes all the difference. We offer a range of treatments and finishes to match your style and protect your furniture for years to come.

Natural / Raw

Lightly sanded to remove splinters, then sealed with a clear matte topcoat that preserves the original color and character of the reclaimed wood. The most authentic look, showing every nail hole, stamp mark, and weathering pattern.

Best for: Rustic, farmhouse, and industrial aesthetics

Stained

We offer over 20 stain colors from light golden oak to deep ebony. Staining evens out color variations between boards while still allowing the natural grain to show through. Each piece is sealed with a polyurethane topcoat for durability.

Best for: Traditional, modern, and transitional interiors

Whitewashed

A diluted white paint wash that creates a light, airy, coastal look. The wash allows the wood grain and character marks to show through while softening the overall tone. Sealed with a satin or matte topcoat.

Best for: Coastal, Scandinavian, and shabby-chic interiors

Painted

Solid-color paint in any color you choose. We use furniture-grade chalk paint or acrylic paint, lightly distressed if desired, and sealed with a durable wax or polyurethane finish. Great for pieces that need to match a specific color scheme.

Best for: Custom color matching, children's furniture, accent pieces

Epoxy / Resin

Two-part epoxy coating that creates a glass-smooth, waterproof surface. Available in clear (showcasing the wood beneath) or tinted with pigments and metallic powders. Popular for bar tops, coffee tables, and counters.

Best for: Bar tops, dining tables, high-traffic commercial surfaces

Outdoor / UV-Sealed

Marine-grade spar urethane or exterior-rated polyurethane that protects against New Mexico's intense UV radiation, temperature swings, and low humidity. Reapplication recommended every 2-3 years depending on sun exposure.

Best for: Patio furniture, garden beds, outdoor signage

Wood Safety & Preparation

Not all pallet wood is suitable for furniture. We take wood safety seriously and follow strict sourcing and preparation protocols.

What We Use

  • Heat-treated (HT stamped) pallets only -- never chemically treated (MB)
  • Pallets sourced from known, clean supply chains
  • Wood inspected for mold, chemical stains, or contamination
  • All boards de-nailed with industrial nail pullers (no hidden fasteners)
  • Surfaces planed and sanded through 120-220 grit progression

What We Avoid

  • Methyl bromide (MB) treated pallets -- toxic chemical fumigant
  • Pallets with unknown treatment markings or no markings at all
  • Wood that has been used to transport hazardous chemicals
  • Boards with visible mold, rot, or insect infestation
  • Painted or coated pallets that may contain lead-based paint

Furniture FAQ

Is pallet wood safe for indoor furniture?

Yes, when properly sourced and prepared. We exclusively use heat-treated (HT) pallets, never chemically treated (MB) pallets. All wood is inspected for contaminants, sanded smooth, and sealed with non-toxic finishes. Our furniture is safe for homes, restaurants, and commercial spaces.

How long does a custom furniture piece take to build?

Most single pieces take 2-4 weeks from design approval to completion. Complex or large pieces (dining sets, bed frames, accent walls) may take 4-6 weeks. Commercial fit-outs with multiple pieces are typically 4-8 weeks depending on scope. We provide a firm timeline with every quote.

Can I provide my own design or inspiration photos?

Absolutely. We encourage it. Send us photos from Pinterest, Instagram, magazines, or your own sketches. We will assess feasibility, suggest any modifications needed for structural integrity or material compatibility, and provide a quote based on your vision.

Do you deliver and install furniture?

Yes. We deliver throughout the Albuquerque metro area. For large pieces like dining tables, bed frames, and accent walls, we include setup and installation at no extra charge. Delivery to locations outside Albuquerque (Santa Fe, Rio Rancho, Los Lunas, etc.) is available for a nominal freight charge.

How do I care for and maintain pallet wood furniture?

For indoor pieces, dust regularly with a soft cloth and avoid placing hot items directly on the surface. Reapply furniture wax or oil every 6-12 months for pieces with wax finishes. For outdoor pieces, bring indoors during extended rain and reapply UV sealant every 2-3 years. Avoid pressure washing, which can damage the wood grain.

Do you offer gift cards or gift furniture?

Yes. We offer gift certificates in any amount that can be applied toward custom furniture commissions. This is a popular gift for housewarmings, weddings, and holidays. The recipient works with our team to design their perfect piece.

Longevity Tips

Care & Maintenance Guide

Reclaimed wood furniture develops even more character with age. Follow these guidelines to keep your pieces looking their best for decades.

Daily Care

  • Dust with a soft, lint-free cloth or microfiber duster
  • Wipe spills immediately -- do not let liquids sit on the surface
  • Use coasters and placemats to protect table tops from heat rings and moisture
  • Avoid dragging objects across surfaces -- lift and place instead

Monthly Maintenance

  • Clean with a damp cloth and mild, pH-neutral soap -- avoid harsh chemicals
  • Inspect for loose fasteners, especially on chairs and tables with legs
  • Apply furniture polish or conditioner for wax-finished pieces
  • Check outdoor pieces for signs of UV fading or finish degradation

Seasonal Care

  • Reapply furniture wax or oil every 6-12 months for indoor pieces
  • Recoat outdoor furniture with UV sealant every 2-3 years in New Mexico sun
  • Move outdoor furniture to shade or indoors during extended rain or snow
  • Tighten all hardware and check structural joints before heavy-use seasons

Humidity & Climate

  • New Mexico is dry -- wood naturally contracts. This is normal and adds character
  • Avoid placing furniture near heating vents, fireplaces, or direct AC drafts
  • Small cracks or separations between boards are natural wood movement, not defects
  • If extreme dryness causes concern, use a room humidifier to maintain 30-50% RH

Stain & Damage Repair

  • Light scratches: rub with a walnut meat or matching wax fill stick
  • Water rings: apply a thin layer of mayonnaise for 30 minutes, then buff
  • Deep gouges: sand lightly with 220-grit, restain, and reseal the area
  • For significant damage, contact us -- we offer refinishing services

What to Avoid

  • Never pressure wash pallet furniture -- it destroys the wood grain
  • Avoid silicone-based polishes that build up and dull the finish over time
  • Do not place hot pots or pans directly on any surface
  • Avoid bleach, ammonia, and abrasive cleaners on any finish type

Wood Sourcing & Safety Standards

Not all pallet wood is furniture-grade. Our rigorous sourcing and preparation process ensures that every piece of furniture we build is safe, clean, and structurally sound.

Our Sourcing Protocol

1

Origin Verification

We only source pallets from known supply chains. Every pallet is traced to its origin industry. We reject pallets from chemical plants, pesticide distributors, and hazardous material handlers.

2

Treatment Stamp Check

Only HT (heat-treated) stamped pallets are used. We never use MB (methyl bromide) treated pallets, which contain toxic chemical residues. Unmarked pallets are also rejected.

3

Visual & Olfactory Inspection

Every board is inspected for chemical stains, unusual odors, oil residue, mold, rot, and insect damage. Any board that fails inspection is routed to industrial recycling -- not furniture.

4

De-nailing & Cleaning

All fasteners are removed with industrial nail pullers. Boards are run through a metal detector to catch embedded nails and staples that could damage tools or injure users.

5

Kiln Drying & Sanitization

Boards are kiln-dried to 8-12% moisture content, which kills any remaining bacteria, mold spores, or insect eggs. This step also stabilizes the wood to prevent future warping or cracking.

6

Surface Preparation

Boards are planed to uniform thickness, then sanded through a 80-120-220 grit progression. The result is a smooth, splinter-free surface ready for finishing.

Understanding Pallet Stamps

The IPPC stamp on a pallet tells you exactly how it was treated. Here is what each code means for furniture safety.

HT
Heat Treated

SAFE for furniture. Thermal treatment only, no chemicals.

KD
Kiln Dried

SAFE for furniture. Moisture reduction through heat -- no chemicals.

DB
Debarked

SAFE when combined with HT. Indicates bark removed before treatment.

MB
Methyl Bromide

NOT SAFE. Toxic chemical fumigant. Never use for furniture or indoor projects.

No stamp
Unknown Treatment

AVOID. Without a stamp, there is no way to verify what chemicals the wood may contain.

Our Safety Guarantee

Every piece of pallet furniture from Albuquerque Pallets is built exclusively from verified HT-stamped pallet wood sourced from clean supply chains. We maintain full traceability records for every batch of wood that enters our furniture workshop.

  • Certificate of wood origin available on request
  • All finishes are low-VOC or zero-VOC formulations
  • Food-safe finish options for tables and kitchen items
  • Child-safe construction with no sharp edges or exposed fasteners
  • Flame-retardant options for commercial and public installations
